No Natal eu ganhei um livro ótimo do meu marido, chamado Inside the Business of Illustration. A recompensa: poder finalmente comprar a saga “A song of ice and fire”.

Demais. E vocês, o que tem lido?

This chrismas my husband gave me a great book called Inside the Business of Illustration. I loved it, and almost finished it in just a couple of days. But soon after that I start reading some traveling guides I bought (I’m a traveling guides maniac) and left the illustration book aside. Anyways, like I said a few days ago on twitter, my goal for this second semester is to finish all the books I left unread, and finally read those I bought forever ago. The reward? I get to buy and read the saga “A song of ice and fire”.

Back to the illustration book, it is a great reading and I recommend it. I came to notice that nowadays the new books about illustration are mainly about: amazing visual references, making ofs, and purely technical. Maybe that’s why I loved this book so much — because it approaches in a very interesting way the life and business of being an illustrator. The authors writes about several themes, debating, interviewing renowned professionals and organizing everything into quick tips. Awesomeness. And you? What are you reading?

#vemgente! (Tem sorteio de um exemplar do livro! )

Last year a former college colleague invited me to create the cover for his mother book. To make the project even more interesting, the book was about women, the emotional, daily and spiritual afflictions of them. The texts were great, I had an awesome time making this illustration I prepared a making of for the whole process for my dear blog readers. Click here and check out the full post! (+ a book giveaway at the end of the post! )

Edit: Sorteio encerrado! Quem tirou a sorte no random.org foi a querida Giuliane Ramos!

The briefing

“Women , their afflictions of the daily life, emotional and spiritual. The book is about fictional and real stories. It’s about women “born” in Santiago de Composta, Spain, pilgrims of life. As a second theme there’s the path itself, a mirror were women experience an encounter with themselves. There are no color restrictions, but I prefer the sober and elegant ones. I like the idea of a spiral representing the inner path, arrows can also symbolize paths. The atmosphere of the book should reflect the author’s enigmatic personality, always questioning herself, in a frantic search for a true identity.” (an abbreviation of a text written by the author).

The epigraph

On the book’s epigraph, given to me with the briefing, I could find interesting elements that could be used on the cover:
Drops of deep clay/ scribblings / Wings of shadow and light
And by the way I plant words / My thoughts spirals
And on each journey / I get closer to the stars

The brainstorm

Before starting a logo, an illustration or an ad, I like to list some concepts and words that fits the project. This is great to help the creation, but also to keep the focus on the project’s briefing. I did something similar on my sister’s blog making of.

The visual alphabet

I tweeted a while ago about a creativity technique that my friend used. On the study that she worked, they called this method “visual alphabet”, that it’s connecting the brand, campaign or illustrations concepts to symbols, and elaborate a sort of a visual alphabet for the whole project. The cool thing about this technique is that the illustration created isn’t only ornamental, but has a whole meaning behind it. The final result is a more elegant and meaningful composition.

The inspiration

Instead of going to the interwebs to find inspiration for this projects, I browse my books for inspiration. I read the “The power of limits” a book about proportional harmonies in nature, art, and architecture and I was fueled with ideas for a abstract illustration.

The roughs

Before starting the final rought, I made some studies, check them out:

The final sketch

I made a very feminine and organic art, alluding to women and nature. The spiritual and identity quest are represented by the spirals and concentric mandalas. These circles were also made thinking about the scribbles, cited on the epigraph. She also writes about stars, light and shadow, that I portrayed abstractly (white and black circles). The arabesques represents tue paths and histories, the “deep thoughts spirals”. The textures used are not random: the triangles symbolizes the initial and primitive part of the journey. The spirals represent the reflection. And the lotus flower, at the center, represents the peace, harmony and self encounter. But enough of rationalization, because the interesting part is everyone making it’s own interpretation.

The vector

Espiada no vetor.

Some vector madness.

The colors

Bellow some colors schemes I developed to aprove with the author. Being a complex illustration, I advise talking about and approving the colors before painting it, because changing the palette later can be a lot of work!

The plain vector

Vectorized and colored illustration, with gradients, but without brushes and textures.

The final art

Final illustration, with brushes (and with some minor details changed by the client request).
