Hoje no twitter eu comentei que eu tinha notícia tão legal quanto bizarra para contar. A novidade é que eu fui convidada para ser jurada de um Desafio Internacional de Design, organizado pelo pessoal da NewWebPick. Quando eles me chamaram, eu fiquei com um pouco de receio, pois concursos e licitações são temas polêmicos e controversos no mundo do Design. Mas li atentamente a todo o regulamento do desafio, e achei tudo bem justo e organizado. E afinal de contas, se Paulo Coelho e Ivete Sangalo podem ser jurados de design, oi eu também posso. Vou analisar as propostas com bastante atenção e cuidado, tentando colaborar, dentro do meu alcance, para concursos de design mais sérios. Copiei depois do jump algumas informações sobre o concurso, mas se quiser saber mais, entra no site oficial.

In 2009, NewWebPick has partnered with world’s number one slippers merchandiser – BaoF International Ltd. to hold the BaoF Cup – “Under The Feet” Design Challenge Competition of Crossover Shoes successfully. With new templates of crossover shoes, to challenge designers from worldwide to design the most creative, trendy and unique Slippers in the world. In addition to its 13 official awards which amounts to a total prize $10,000 (USD), the winners’ works will be profiled in reputable medias. NewWebPick partnering with BaoF International Ltd. is proudly presenting to you the BaoF Cup 02 – “Step On Journey” Design Challenge Competition of Crossover Shoes again.

Estou super feliz: no começo dessa semana fui “abduzeeda“. Explico: o Fábio Sasso, dono do super site de design Abduzeedo, publicou como “Tutorial da Semana” o passo a passo que fiz para o blog da minha irmã. Obrigada, Fábio! Fiquei tão feliz com a repercussão, que me empolguei em fazer novos tutoriais!

I’m really happy: This past monday I was… “abducted by design“. I explain: Fábio Sasso, the founder of one of the coolest design sites I know – Abduzeedo – published my making of as their “Tutorial of the week“. Thanks, Fábio! I’m thinking about making new tutorials, what do you guys think?

Olha que super legal: fui convidada para participar da seção “Passo a passo” da revista AbcDesign #32. (Obrigada, Mari!) Para deixar a matéria bem interessante e completa, decidi fazer uma ilustração especialmente para ela, podendo assim registrar todo o processo de criação, do começo ao fim. Como minha irmã estava há tempos me enchendo a paciência por uma ilustração, decidi aproveitar a oportunidade e fazer um desenho para o header do blog dela: A modo mio. Aliás, o blog da minha irmã é muito divertido, recomendo! E fica a dica: essa edição da AbcDesign está muito legal, vale a pena comprar. Essa semana ainda coloco aqui no blog o passo a passo gigantesco na íntegra!

I was invited by AbcDesign magazine #32 to participate in their “Step by Step” session – super yay! To make the making of really interesting and complete, I decided to make an illustration specially for it, and register the whole creative process. Since my sister was bugging me for ages for an illustration, I decided to make a drawing for her blog: A modo mio. Btw, her blog is really funny, you should check it out. Also, this edition of AbcDesign is really cool, really worth the buy. Later this week I’ll post here the complete making of!

Eu estava no começo da faculdade quando me mostraram a revista NewWebPick. Lembro de ficar dias e dias babando nas incontáveis páginas da revista digital mais legal que eu já tinha visto. Alguns anos se passaram e – vejam só – cá estou eu, participando da edição #28, com uma entrevista minha e um mini showcase do meu trabalho. Nem preciso dizer que amei o convite, né? Ah, e escolheram uma ilustração minha como background da revista, adorei! Como ainda não saiu a edição free da revista, fiz um printscreen das páginas para vocês e colei a entrevista na íntegra. » Tell us a little bit about your background?
I grew up in an pretty island located in southern Brazil named Florianópolis, a city with over 40 beaches. Even though Floripa is a beautiful place, at a early age I started to travel the world every chance I got. I always loved to draw, create artsy stuff and to stay for hours straight in the computer, so to study Graphic Design seemed like the right thing to do. I worked as an Art Director and Graphic Designer in studios and agencies in Brazil and Italy (where I lived for a year). Now I’m back in my hometown, where I work fulltime as a freelancer Designer and illustrator.

» Who are your main inspirations? / What are your influences?
My main inspirations are the nature, good music, the peculiarities of the daily life and interesting books. I also admire the artistic movement Art Nouveau and it is without a doubt a big influence in my works.

» How do you keep motivated and interested?
A good way to stay always motivated and excited about Graphic Design is to alternate both personal and commercial projects. I also try to work on projects that stimulate and defy me, pushing myself to always evolve.

» Do you have any new projects coming up that you can tell us about?
I’m currently developing illustrations and layouts for a nice project for Petrobrás (Brazilian petroleum company) that will target different people, from diverse cultures, ages, genders and ethnicities. The initial research was very fun and I just started developing the layouts.

» What do you know about your country’s design/designers?
Even though the formal practice of Graphic Design in Brazil is recent, I think that our designers are among the best in the world. I believe that our rich visual culture has contributed to a generation of inspired, creative and versatile professionals.

» What is your most favorite commercial design of your own?
I like a series of illustrations made for an Italian Design Studio, where I had to follow the clients briefing and use a really bright and saturated palette, instead of using my usual harmonic and washed colors. The challenge to work in a way that I wasn’t used to was positive and I really liked the final result.

» Any words you would like to pass it to new comer designers?
Create a website or a blog to showcase your layouts and illustrations, seek for other professionals feedback, accept constructive criticism and develop a network. Do personal projects and really apply to your academic projects to evolve as a designer and build a nice portfolio.

» Any final comments:
I would like to thank for this interview’s invitation. Olha que novidade boa: meu trabalho foi destaque em duas revistas que eu adoro. Imagina, você ler uma revista há anos e um belo dia sair nela! Yay, fiquei super feliz. // Check out these great news: my work was featured in two magazines that I love. Imagine that, appear in a magazine that you read and admire for years! Made me so happy.

Um tempo atrás o pessoal da Itaú Cultural me chamou pra ilustrar uma reportagem da revista deles, a Continuum (que é bem legal). O texto, da Mariana Sgarioni, fala sobre como estamos nos tornando intolerantes e construindo relações cada vez mais frágeis. Ela escreve que “Ao cortarmos as relações com quem tivemos alguma desavença, perdemos a chance de construir vínculos duradouros e de exercitar uma palavrinha mágica: tolerância“. Gostei bastante do tema que eles abordaram e  c0ncordo quando ela comenta que hoje em dia as pessoas estão um pouco preguiçosas em manter e reatar relacionamentos. Abaixo um pedacinho da reportagem, quem quiser ler inteira tem aqui.

Não tem jeito. Onde quer que existam pelo menos duas pessoas, mais dia, menos dia, haverá um conflito entre elas. Até porque, como já deve ter dado para perceber, é humanamente impossível dois seres concordarem em tudo.

Já que hora ou outra vamos nos estranhar mesmo, a questão passa a ser não mais o bate-boca, e sim a maneira pela qual vamos lidar com ele. O que a maioria responde neste momento é que o importante é dialogar até chegar a um consenso. Tem razão.

Porém, cá entre nós, essa resposta tem um baita cheiro de frase feita sem pensar - a verdade mesmo é que preferimos desprezar o “inimigo”. Cortar relações, virar a cara, deixar a pessoa para lá, armar um clima. Convenhamos, é muito mais fácil do que tentar resolver a desavença, certo? Alguém o contrariou, disse algo indigesto? Simples: aperte o botão “delete” do computador, esqueça essa pessoa, finja que ela não existe mais. Arrume outro amigo, outro namorado, outro colega de trabalho. E, assim, como num passe de mágica, uma conexão que estava firmando sua base é quebrada.

Massa – Aquela pergunta básica: Como você se envolveu com design e ilustração?
Carol – Minha irmã mais velha é muito talentosa e sempre gostou muito de desenhar e eu, como boa caçula, copiava tudo o que ela fazia. Além do meu amor pelos lápis sempre fui apaixonada por computadores e desde os cinco anos de idade sou grudada neles. Apesar disso a escolha pelo curso não foi tão fácil e óbvia. Por se tratar de uma profissão nova eu mal sabia direito o que era design gráfico (e pra ser sincera acabei descobrindo só lá pela metade da faculdade). Antes de optar por esse curso cheguei a passar em Direito mas não cursei – para o desespero da minha familia. Em vez disso fiz cursinho, esperei mais um ano e entrei na UFSC.
